Fraxel Laser Treatment – San Diego
Fraxel is a specific type of laser that is particularly useful for scar improvement, blemishes, fine lines, discoloration, and overall skin replenishment. Fraxel is one brand name of fractionated laser devices, which use a laser energy that is distributed over a larger surface area by treating a “fraction” of the total area with laser pulses spaced a certain distance apart. This allows localized deeper energy transmission, which then allows for the energy to spread over a surface area without having to treat every square centimeter of the zone with laser pulses. This may result in less heat generation and more overall comfort. For this reason, among others, Fraxel and other fractionated laser technologies are very popular as office based cosmetic nonsurgical procedures. One interesting option with Fraxel is to combine it with a variety of other topical products that can be delivered deeper into the skin in the “wells” created by the Fraxel laser beam.
Think about this kind of like planting a garden. You can create spots for your plants to be planted. To do so, you have to create a little bit of a well in the soil. Then you can apply nutrients, water, and other substances into the space before you plant the seeds or roots. With Fraxel, we can create spots for the introduction of numerous beneficial medical substances that can then be delivered deeper to the regenerative layers of the skin (deep dermis). These can include:
- Hyaluronic acid filler materials
- Steroid medications for certain inflammatory skin conditions
- Topical medications for rosacea
- Hydroquinone-containing skin care products that can target pigmentation
- Other medications
Dr. Sayed’s dermatology and plastic surgery colleagues have taught him many novel ways to incorporate fractionated laser treatment and topical medication delivery into a skin care management system to supplement surgical rejuvenation. We are happy to talk about some of these techniques during a consultation with you.
Most Fraxel treatments cost between $150 and $300 per session depending on the extent of treatment, the location, and other considerations. Usually this is done with some topical anesthetics applied 30 minutes before treatment. Treatments may be spaced about 3 weeks apart. There is no real limit to the number of Fraxel treatments one can have, but some precautions need to be taken to minimize risks of pigment changes, cold sore outbreaks, and other occasional risks of the procedure.
Fraxel is also a significant part of Dr. Sayed’s method to improve or minimize scars. It is not unusual to recommend Fraxel therapy for facelift, breast lift, breast reduction, tummy tuck, brachioplasty (arm lift), body lift, and thigh lift patients. These are procedures where there may be some visibility even to very well healed and cosmetically pleasing scars. Some patients may be prone to thicker (hypertrophic) scars or even keloids, and laser treatments can be part of the management in some of these individuals.
