Mommy Makeover

Mommy Makeover IN LA JOLLA AND NEWPORT BEACH | TIM SAYED MD

For a Slimmer, Sculpted, Lifted Figure

Motherhood is a blessing. It changes your life in ways that you could never imagine. What you do, how you think, how you plan, and what you prioritize is totally different after you have kids. The body also goes through dramatic changes. The incredible transformation your body experiences in the process of creating a new human is miraculous, but it can also cause unwanted changes to your figure. Your abdominal muscles are subjected to great pressure and stretch apart to accommodate your little one. Your breasts swell and maintain an abnormal size well past the end of pregnancy if you choose to breastfeed. The skin on your belly also stretches out as your baby grows. These and other changes can take your once trim, slim, tight figure, and leave it looser and less shapely.

Moms put so much into their families. They give and give and often put their own needs aside. However, moms deserve to do what they can to keep true to their inner selves.  And one remarkable method of bringing out a mom’s true self-identity is to help restore her pre-pregnancy physique. A mommy makeover is an extraordinarily effective way to transform a patient’s post-baby body. The term “mommy makeover” is commonly used to describe a combination of procedures that help reverse some of the effects of pregnancy on the female physique. These include corrections for sagging breasts, reduction of excess fat in the midsection, removal of extra skin, tightening of the abdominal muscles, and sometimes, transfer of fat to the buttocks for better gluteal projection.

The most common procedures included in treatment plans are: Breast augmentation, Breast lift, Tummy tuck, Liposuction (targeting the flanks). For women who want comprehensive rejuvenation, Tim Sayed, MD, MBA, FACS offers buttocks enhancement through fat grafting, also known as the Brazilian butt lift. In this case, stubborn pockets of fat on the back and abdomen are used as sources of grafted fat.

Mommy Makeover 101

Keeping operative times down is key to a patient’s safety and healthy recovery, and shorter procedures also reduce the amount of stress on the tissues. Patients who are unsure about gluteal augmentation, don’t want it, or only need minimal augmentation can usually get away with having a single stage procedure that includes buttock augmentation along with the breast and tummy tuck procedures. Otherwise, many of our patients who want gluteal enhancement may be advised to have their makeovers performed in two stages.

Dr. Sayed personalizes his approach to the mommy makeover for each patient, so the procedure will differ depending on the patient’s anatomy and aesthetic goals. If a patient wants buttock enhancement, we advise her to have their combination liposuction and Brazilian butt lift in the first stage of their treatment, which will optimize the amount of fat that can be used for the gluteal shaping and also allow a maximum of skin removal in the second stage after the body has a chance to recover. The second stage will then feature the remaining procedures for breast enhancement and the tummy tuck. Any skin that did not fully retract after the fat transfer can be aggressively removed in this second stage surgery. Some patients may also have some additional fat transfer as a “touchup” or “Round 2 Brazilian Buttlift” at this time.

Because Dr. Sayed prioritizes the safety and comfort of all his patients, he is now offering Exparel, an innovative non-narcotic drug delivery system that lasts longer than narcotics and can offer a faster recovery, as part of our Enhanced Recovery Package. With Exparel, Dr. Sayed can ensure the patient’s comfort without the need for inconvenient pumps. Some studies have shown a reduction in the requirement for narcotic pain medication with Exparel when compared to other forms of local anesthetic medication injected into the surgical site during surgery. Additional Enhanced Recovery options include the use of specialized Embrace dressings, which can help reduce scarring.

How Can I Prepare for My Mommy Makeover in Newport Beach?

Pregnancy and childbirth can cause a wide range of changes in the body. If you decide to have children after your mommy makeover, your body will change in ways that can possibly affect the results you’ve worked so hard to achieve. We typically advise our patients to wait until they’re finished having children  but we understand that life can sometimes change our plans. If you’re considering having children after your surgery, make sure to discuss it with Dr. Sayed and we can help you consider what your options are.

  • Have reasonable expectations for what your treatment plan can accomplish
  • Look at before and after photos of the different procedures so you understand what techniques you might be interested in
  • No smoking or taking any nicotine for 3 weeks before and after the procedure
  • Stay well rested and well hydrated and eat a nutritious diet balanced with plenty of protein
  • If your diet is lacking in vitamins, take vitamin C and zinc supplementation, but ask Dr. Sayed about other supplements. We have a list of ingredients we ask you to avoid in the immediate preop phase to optimize healing and minimize bleeding risk
  • Designate a caretaker who can help you through the first 5 to 7 days after your breast lift
  • Identify whether any female relatives in your immediate family have a history of breast cancer

How Long Do Results Usually Last?

Your body will continue to change after your procedure; aging won’t stop after your procedure, although your comprehensive body lift will help your body look slimmer and years younger. Other factors like weight gain and a future pregnancy can alter results, which is why it’s highly recommended that patients maintain their results through diet and exercise or wait until they’re done having children until having the mommy makeover. If you’re thinking of having children after your procedure, make sure to discuss it with Dr. Sayed during your consultation.

Mommy Makeover in Newport Beach FAQs

The operative time for will vary, depending on what procedures a patient chooses, their anatomy, and what their aesthetic goals are. Typically, surgical treatment take around 4-6 hours to perform.

Your procedure will be performed in a local, AAAASF-certified private operating room, which means your surgical suite is up to hospital-level or higher levels of safety. Dr. Sayed operates in accredited facilities in San Diego and Newport Beach. After the mommy makeover, our patients usually spend a couple of hours in the postoperative suite before being discharged to a caretaker or a family member. If patients have any urgent questions, they can call Dr. Sayed with a number that’s available 24/7. Dr. Sayed also offers an app that allows patients to send texts, photos, videos, and more to us in a secure, digital format. This allows us to keep track of your recovery and update your post-op instructions in addition to in-person visits to our San Diego or Newport Beach office.

In the days following treatment, you may experience sensations like bruising, swelling, mild discomfort, numbness, tightness, and more around the various areas that were treated. We typically advise patients to take 3 weeks off from social events and to avoid driving for at least 10 days or for as long as they’re taking prescription pain medication. We usually use dissolvable sutures, but if you have non-dissolvable sutures they might need to be removed after about 14 days.

If you have your treatment done in more than one stage, Dr. Sayed will give you specialized instructions for your recovery that will be customized for the procedures you underwent. After your mommy makeover, we recommend that you avoid any exercise for three weeks, and after that, only returning to a light fitness routine under Dr. Sayed’s guidance.

We recommend that patients encourage circulation with some light walking early on in their recovery. We advise that patients change their dressings regularly and check their wounds to make sure they’re healing correctly. You will receive detailed instructions and guidance in hoonto properly care for your healing surgical sites.

We take great care to help minimize our patients’ scars. We offer Embrace dressings, a special type of dressing that relieves tension on wounds to minimize scarring. We also offer fractional laser therapy to reduce the appearance of scars after they’ve healed.

The length of your recovery will all depend on what procedures you choose. Depending on whether you have a staged or combined procedure, you should see your full results slowly over a year or more.

About 3-6 months. It’s recommended that the tissues have somewhat healed from previous procedures and that swelling has dissipated before patients move on to the second stage of their mommy makeover.

It’s highly recommended that patients wait until their hormone levels have returned to their pre-pregnancy levels before they undergo treatment. Hormone levels typically return to normal at least 6 months after childbirth and breastfeeding. Our patients should also work on getting to their target weight by that time.

Numbness is actually a common sensation after surgery; it happens because some of the procedures result in trauma to the cutaneous nerves, leading to a loss of sensation.  This should resolve itself gradually over the next six months to a year. Once the nerves start to regenerate, it’s common to then feel tingling or quick jolts of sensation before the patient returns to normal function.

To make it easier for them to get up and down, some of our patients sleep in a reclined position. They usually do this using an incline pillow, a recliner, or just propping themselves up with a few soft pillows. Sleeping in a reclined position also helps reduce the tension on the abdomen, allowing the patient’s muscles to recovery much more successfully. Sometimes to alleviate back pain, our patients sleep on their side supported by pillows to prevent them from rolling onto their stomachs. Keep in mind, some surgeons don’t recommend sleeping on your sides since it could possibly affect your implants. It’s incredibly important that patients don’t sleep on their stomachs while they’re recovering from a tummy tuck, so make sure to talk to Dr. Sayed if you’re having trouble sleeping in a reclined position.

The kind of scarring you experience depends on the type of procedures you choose to get. If you have a breast lift with implants, you will end up with scars around your areola and the breast mound. With a tummy tuck, you’ll end up with a horizontal line above the pubis that goes from hip to hip. Once they heal, scars from liposuction and fat grafting to the buttocks tend to look like small, inconspicuous moles. Of course, from the time of your surgery to your recovery, Dr. Sayed will make sure your scarring heals as well as possible. He utilizes an advanced type of silicone bandage called Embrace that reduces tension, the leading cause of scarring, on the incisions as they heal.Afterwards, patients can use fractional laser therapy to further reduce the appearance of scars.
