Dermal Fillers IN LA JOLLA AND NEWPORT BEACH | TIM SAYED MD
While aging is inevitable, looking your age doesn’t have to be. At Dr. Sayed’s practices in La Jolla and Newport Beach, non-invasive dermal fillers provide men and women of all ages with a way to enhance their appearance subtly.
Fillers can be injected into numerous locations on the face by an experienced injector. Some of the more commonly injected areas are shown on this diagram. Your needs may vary. Injection is done using a sterile technique using the smallest possible needle that allows the filler to be injected precisely. Tim Sayed, MD, MBA,FACS may massage the area as he is injecting or may mold the product further with a gentle technique. Ice and numbing cream are frequently used to keep patients comfortable. Our favorite products even include numbing medication built-in!
What Are Dermal Fillers?
Not all patients show the signs of aging the same way. While some may see crow’s feet developing around their eyes, others are more concerned about sunken cheeks and eyes. Your consultation with our experienced plastic surgeon will provide Dr. Sayed with important insight into your concerns and goals, allowing him to recommend the right type of dermal filler for you. To give patients plenty of options, Dr. Sayed offers a wide range of filler types and brands at his practices in La Jolla and Newport Beach. These include:
- Juvéderm® Ultra, Ultra Plus, Ultra XC and Ultra Plus XC
- Restylane®
- Voluma®
- Volbella®
- Perlane®
- Radiesse®
- Restylane® Kysse
- Restylane® Lyft
- Restylane® Refyne/Defyne
- Restylane® Silk
- Sculptra®
How Do I Know if I am a Candidate for Dermal Fillers in San Diego?
Most patients are candidates for filler injections. Some of our selection criteria to include you as a candidate include:
- Wrinkles, creases, areas of fat loss, acne scars, pockmarks, smoker’s lines, hollows, thin lips, or other contour irregularities of the face.
- Lines of a certain depth – some lines and creases do better with certain brands than others, and they may need to be combined with Botox® or Dysport®.
- General good health, meaning you do not have major uncorrected cardiovascular, respiratory, kidney or other major organ conditions, are not pregnant, and have no neurologic conditions or other contraindications.
- No prior allergic or other unpleasant reaction (these are very rare, but some fillers may need skin testing – Dr. Sayed usually prefers the varieties of injectables that don’t require skin testing).
- Reasonable expectations of how much youthful restoration is possible with specific techniques.

Dr. Sayed uses sophisticated drawing tools, the patient’s images, and anatomic education tools that he helped develop himself to inform the patient of every aspect of the procedure. Dr Sayed’s signature procedures include breast implant removal, breast lift and tummy tuck.
Do Different Injectables Have Different Functions?
Most certainly. Dermal fillers from different manufacturers and different varieties serve different functions. Dermal fillers can vary mainly according to their chemical ingredients and particle size. Although dermal fillers generally provide volume to a specific area and smooth out skin, discrepancies in different treatment areas, such as the brow, the cheeks, the nose, and the lips, demand that dermal fillers have particular properties for treating specific regions.
Lip Fillers
For example, Restylane® Kysse is a dermal filler specifically designed to volumize the lips. This is because the lips are constantly moving and experience pressure and touch more than other regions of the face. So, Restylane® Kysse needs to be a more robust filler to provide the results clients expect. Through lip injections with Restylane® Kysse, Dr. Sayed and his team have provided many patients with outstanding results.
Restylane® Contour
Another example of various types of injectables being used to treat different parts of the face is Restylane® Contour. Restylane® Contour is specifically designed for use in the cheek, or malar and submalar areas (as represented by red and orange coloration in the above image).
As people age, the midface and cheeks lose buccal fat, skin laxity, and volume, which leads to a loss of definition of the cheekbones and the youthful, active appearance of the cheeks. Restylane® Contour is an FDA-approved treatment that lasts for up to 48 weeks. It increases volume in the cheeks and improves definition in the features of the mid-face. Restylane® Contour treatments are similar to other injectables in that they are administered with a hypodermic needle at strategic locations around the cheeks, and treatment sessions last only around ten to fifteen minutes.
How Long do Dermal Filler Results Usually Last?
This really depends on the choice of filler – while some dermal fillers may require touch-ups around three months after treatment, others can be left alone for up to 18 months. Your mileage may vary, as they say, depending on how quickly you metabolize the product. Generally, products recommended for treating smaller fine wrinkles tend to fade away faster than thicker products, such as those designed to add volume to the cheeks. Speaking with your plastic surgeon before treatment and exploring all available options can help you achieve the results you’re looking for.

Newport Beach Dermal Filler FAQs
- Have a reasonable expectation of what injections can accomplish
- Stay well rested and well hydrated and eat a nutritious diet balanced with plenty of protein
- Know which areas concern you and do some mental math – one of the main challenges in counseling filler patients is to make sure they understand the volumes that may be needed to achieve the corrections they seek. Think about your budget so we can prioritize if you can’t treat all areas.
- Avoid blood thinners that you are not absolutely required to take, as well as certain over the counter drugs (we can furnish you with a list) that increase the bruising risk
- Consider taking natural arnica montana supplements beforehand to minimize bruising risk
- Come into the office without makeup if possible, as it will speed up your appointment (we have makeup wipes too)
- Make sure you are not doing injections within 72 hours of an event if you will be in the public eye, as a small amount of bruising may briefly occur
- Do not commit to heavy exercise within 48 hours to follow your injection in order to minimize risk of product migration
These injections have minimal downtime, although small injection site bruises and small areas of firmness occasionally occur. Sometimes the injection sites look like little mosquito bites of swelling for a few hours. We’d like you to take it easy for the first two days after the injections in terms of exercise and other vigorous cardiovascular activity. Also, we advise you not to manipulate the areas treated for 72 hours in order to not cause migration of the product. If you have a Friday or Saturday event, you might want to get your fillers 10 days earlier to give yourself time for the effects to take place (some swelling may occur and touchups are occasionally advised) and to ensure you don’t have to do anything special to conceal any bruising at the injection sites.
For most patients, the actual process of injection takes from ten to twenty minutes. This depends on how many areas are being treated and whether it is your first time or you are a repeat Filler customer. Some fillers like Sculptra® require pre-mixing, while others like Juvéderm®, Voluma, Volbella, Restylane® and Perlane® come pre-prepared in the box. Many patients come in about 30-45 minutes before their scheduled appointments to have some numbing cream applied.
We don’t like to publish pricing as it is subject to market changes and dependent on the types of procedures you consider. Pricing also depends on the type of filler. Review our Pricing page to build a “wishlist” and get estimated pricing on a procedure or a combination of procedures. We also have a fee schedule available in the office after your consultation. Feel free to contact our San Diego office for a pre-consultation and we are happy to provide more information.
Fillers are usually priced per syringe of product used, depending on the number of cc’s of filler in the syringe based on the product selected. For example, a syringe of filler could come in a 1cc or 0.8cc size, so the price may be adjusted if it is a smaller or larger syringe. Dr. Sayed can counsel you before treatment on how many syringes/cc’s are advised.
