Subfascial Augmentation 101
While subfascial breast augmentations may be new to U.S. patients, the technique was first introduced in Brazil several years ago by Dr. Ruth Graf. Initially developed for highly active women looking to enhance cup size without risking distortion, the procedure has become a popular option for countless other women looking to achieve more subtle breast enhancement.
As the name suggests, the technique behind subfascial augmentation sets the treatment apart from more traditional augmentation options like submuscular and subglandular placement. During these treatments, the implant either above or below the pectoral muscle.
While each approach has its own advantages regarding recovery and results, they also impact the final look of the breast – subglandular implants are often easier to see and feel because they are placed just below the skin’s surface. Submuscular implants can create a more natural-looking appearance in the long run. However, the procedure requires that muscle be separated from the ribs to place them – meaning much more downtime for patients. Furthermore, breast implants placed below the muscle can take several weeks to “settle”, leaving patients with seemingly high and obtrusive implants until the muscle reshapes itself and accommodates them.
Subfascial breast augmentation offers patients the natural look they want without the hassle of a lengthy recovery. Instead, this approach places the implant right below the fascia – an extremely thin yet highly durable tissue found on nearly every muscle within your body. Once placed, the implants are permanently anchored in their final position, eliminating the “settling” process and cutting down recovery time.
How Do I Know If I Am a Candidate for a Subfascial Augmentation in Newport Beach?
At Tim Sayed MD, our goal is to provide all patients with personalized treatments that address their concerns while enhancing their overall appearance. Every breast augmentation starts with an in-depth evaluation by our plastic surgeon. This visit gives Dr. Sayed that chance to get to know each individual and their goals, as well as determine which augmentation techniques will best address their specific needs.
Subfascial augmentation was originally developed for highly active women, such as weightlifters or bodybuilders who want to enhance their breast size without compromising their strength or risking unwanted lateral movement. Some of the best candidates for subfascial augmentation are:
- Women who want to replace older, larger implants with a more natural-looking implant
- Women who’ve experienced implant displacement
- Women with weakened pectoral muscles or tissue as a result of childbirth or aging
While this list covers some of the top candidates for the procedure, every patient is unique. Your first consultation with Dr. Sayed will explore whether you will benefit from this technique. Call today to schedule your initial consultation and explore your implant treatment options.
The Benefits of Subfascial Augmentation in San Diego
In addition to shorter recovery time, the subfascial technique offers several other important benefits to patients.
- Shorter Recovery: Recovery is often the most dreaded part of plastic surgery, but with a subfascial placement, this period is significantly reduced. The benefits don’t stop there. Cutting down on post-operative recovery reduces post-surgical discomfort. In fact, many patients can return to work within a few days of their breast augmentation surgery and can get back to their exercise routine within two weeks of surgery.
- Minimized Risk of Distortion: For extremely active women, maintaining breast augmentation results can be a challenge. Frequent running often pits gravity against muscle tissue and can cause sagging within years following surgery. Similarly, routine arm movements can disrupt implant placement. Known as muscle movement animation, this unwanted side effect is most common with active patients who’ve received submuscular breast implants. For these patients, constant arm movement causes the implant to move laterally as the arm moves. With subfascial augmentation, the implant is anchored in place above the muscle – leaving it untouchable by muscle movement. For women who want to enhance their curves without giving up their workout routines, subfascial augmentation is the ideal technique.
- Discreet, Long Lasting Results: Long-term results also improve when patients choose subfascial augmentation. Placing the implant right above the muscle yet containing it with the fascia creates immediate support for the implant – not unlike a bra. As a result, this creates a more natural, slope-like appearance once healed and ensures breasts retain their appearance and stay in position years after surgery. For many women visiting Dr. Sayed for breast augmentation, this advantage makes subfascial augmentation among the most requested techniques.

What to Expect During Treatment
Although subfascial augmentation requires less downtime than other implant placement techniques, it is nonetheless a form of invasive plastic surgery and requires some preparation from patients. After Dr. Sayed has recommended this augmentation technique, our specialist will begin to walk you through available options for breast implants, helping to find the right fit.
In the weeks leading up to surgery, we ask that patients stop smoking and taking certain over the counter medications as these may impact recovery results. We may also request that you come in for pre-surgery consultations as part of your preparation.
During the procedure, Dr. Sayed will make a small inframammary incision (below the breast, in the fold). This incision is well hidden and offers good access to the breast. The fascia above the pectoral muscle is then lifted and the implant is placed into the open area via a funnel. Once placed, Dr. Sayed will close this incision with sutures and patients will be sent home to recover.
While subfascial breast augmentation may be less invasive, patients may experience some discomfort during healing. We can provide pain medication if needed. Discomfort will usually be resolved within a few weeks of treatment. Following your surgery, you’ll visit our office for a post-treatment follow-up, during which Dr. Sayed will be able to evaluate your healing and provide a timeline to when you can get back to your routine.
