Brazilian Butt Lift Safety: How to Ensure Beautiful Results Safely

In recent years, Brazilian butt lifts have grown dramatically in their popularity. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the number of glutoplasties performed jumped 10% between 2016 to 2017, and current projections suggest the procedure will continue to grow. For patients, the opportunity to remove stubborn fat cells from one part of the body to the derriere can help them achieve two goals with only one trip to the operating room. However, a warning from the same Board suggests that this procedure carries a much higher mortality rate than other procedures.

What is the Risk Associated with Brazilian Butt Lift?

Pulmonary fat embolisms (PFEs) or fatal fat embolisms occur when the pulmonary veins are blocked due to fat particles. Usually, the result of widespread trauma such as a broken leg, these obstructions prevent blood from traveling to the heart for oxygenation and can travel through the veins to the heart, blocking the arteries. During a Brazilian butt lift, fatal fat embolisms are caused when the cannula delivering transplanted fat cells injures a vein or directly injects the adipose tissue into the vein. This can happen if a surgeon injects too deeply or accidentally nicks a vein.

Stay Safe During Your Butt Lift with These Tips

In addition to the risk of fatal fat embolism, Brazilian butt lifts also present other risks associated with surgery. Anesthesia risks, poor healing, and infection can all compromise your health and results. With these complications in mind, it’s important to be picky about who you visit for your surgery.

When choosing your Brazilian butt lift plastic surgeon, be sure to look for the following:

Board Certification

Only board-certified plastic surgeons like Dr. Sayed have undergone the extensive training required to successfully perform any cosmetic procedure. For high-risk procedures like butt lifts, having the expertise of a peer-reviewed, highly qualified professional is especially important. These individuals are highly trained to identify risks and treat them before they can compromise your surgical results and life.

Do Your Research

There is nothing wrong with vetting multiple plastic surgeons during the initial stages of your surgical journey. It is an incredibly important step in verifying that you have all the information necessary to choose the right procedure and practice. While looking for your plastic surgeon, be sure to ask about the risks, what you can expect from the surgery and recovery, and about the benefits of the butt lift. A good plastic surgeon will help you understand what realistic results will look like for your unique scenario.

Choose an Accredited Facility

While the Brazilian butt lifts may be marketed as an easy, minimally invasive way of achieving great curves, the procedure is still surgery that requires anesthesia. Choosing a facility that has a strong reputation for excellence and has the support staff in case something goes wrong will provide you with the peace of mind that you’re in safe hands at every step of the treatment process.

Tips to Make Your Mommy Makeover a Breeze

As a woman, you already know your body is capable of miracles. You not only carried a baby to term, but you gave birth and even nourished your child with your breast milk.

However, all these amazing feats came with a cost – stretch marks, sagging breasts, and a poochy belly you can’t shake, no matter how much you diet and exercise. But you shouldn’t lose hope: A mommy makeover is the key to restoring your pre-pregnancy form and helping you regain your confidence after having a baby.

What Is a Mommy Makeover?

A mommy makeover is an umbrella term for a combination of cosmetic surgical procedures used to address some of women’s most common post-pregnancy complaints. While the process is highly customizable, it generally encompasses the following:

If desired, Dr. Sayed also offers fat grafting to enhance the buttocks – a procedure called the Brazilian butt lift.

How to Prepare for a Mommy Makeover

The first step in getting ready for a mommy makeover is to get as close to your target weight as possible through diet and exercise. Being in good physical health is essential to successfully recovering from surgery. You should also wait until your hormone levels are back to where they were pre-pregnancy, which usually takes at least half a year after childbirth and breastfeeding.

If you are a smoker, you should also quit before your surgery. Smoking cigarettes causes blood vessels to constrict, which will reduce the amount of oxygen in blood cells and negatively impacts your body’s ability to heal quickly.

The final – and perhaps most crucial – tip in mommy makeover preparation is to arrange for someone to help you around the house during your recovery period. This person could be your spouse, a neighbor, a family member, or a close friend. Successful recovery from a mommy makeover requires you to commit fully to a recovery period of at least two to three weeks. You’ll need someone to help you with daily tasks such as looking after your children, doing laundry, and preparing meals, in addition to medical needs such as keeping your incision sites clean and disinfected. For the best healing, you’ll need to be as stress-free as possible, so make sure whoever you ask to help you is trustworthy and capable.

Things to Know as You Recover From a Mommy Makeover

First, you’ll need to plan at least two weeks of downtime for your mommy makeover recovery. If your OB-GYN put you on bed rest at some point during your pregnancy, you’ll already be familiar with this concept. However, that doesn’t mean you should be immobile all day, every day. Getting up and walking around – in moderation – can help with your recovery process. No, you shouldn’t expect to be able to do an intense workout, but make a point of standing up and moving around for a few minutes each day.

Before your surgery, it’s best to prepare your recovery room with plenty of comfortable pillows, soft blankets, and anything you need to keep yourself entertained – whether that’s curating the perfect playlist, stocking up your Netflix queue, or downloading plenty of books or magazines to your e-reader. As a mom, you’re probably not used to having much “me time,” but since you’re on doctor’s orders to take it easy, you might as well seize the opportunity.

Put those super-mom planning skills to work in the week or so ahead of your surgery and make time to meal prep, laundry, cleaning, ironing, and other chores you won’t be able to do while you recover. You’ll be glad you did – and so will your designated caretaker.

Also, be prepared to be on a bit of an emotional rollercoaster during your recovery period. Surgery itself can be an intense experience, and combined with the effects of the pain medication, you should expect some mood swings – often, your emotions will fluctuate from elation to sadness minute by minute. Make sure you and your family are ready for this side effect.

Breast Lift + Augmentation: Why You Might Consider this Duo

Aging, pregnancy, and genetics all play a role in changing the shape of your breasts over the course of your lifetime. If you are worried about breasts that have begun to sag or flatten, you may be weighing the benefits of a breast lift procedure to restore your youthful profile. But while a breast lift is ideal for repositioning the breasts higher on the chest, it will not be able to address volume loss, which is why many women are opting to combine a breast lift with a breast augmentation.

What You Need to Know About a Breast Lift and Augmentation

A breast lift as a standalone procedure may not provide the results you are looking for if your breasts have lost significant volume, which happens to many women during pregnancy and breastfeeding. The skin that stretches to provide milk for a baby can fail to bounce back to its pre-pregnancy position, leading to breasts that droop lower on the chest.

Though a breast lift will remove excess skin and move the breasts and nipple-areola complex to a perkier position, it may actually decrease your breast volume slightly. For many women, combining a breast augmentation with a lift is an ideal choice, because the dual procedure creates both an increased breast volume and an enhanced breast shape. Getting breast implants at the same time as your breast lift surgery should not significantly add to your recovery time, and the results can provide a dramatic improvement in the appearance of your breasts.

There are two significant advantages to combining a breast augmentation with a lift in the same procedure: It saves money and will also help you avoid having to undergo two recovery processes from two separate surgeries.

Who Is a Good Candidate for a Breast Lift + Augmentation?

In general, the same characteristics that make a woman a good candidate for a breast lift also qualify her to get a breast augmentation. These include:

  • Overall good health
  • Being a nonsmoker
  • Have no masses in the breasts after an exam
  • Having a positive support network of family and friends
  • Realistic expectations for the results of the surgery

The best way to determine whether you need a breast lift is a simple check called the “pencil test.” To perform this test, place a pencil in the crease beneath one of your breasts. If the pencil rolls away, you still have sufficient perkiness in your breasts. However, if your breast holds the pencil in place, you are a likely candidate for a breast lift surgery.

Recovering From a Breast Lift With Augmentation

For the first few days after your surgery, you can expect some tenderness, bruising, and swelling across your chest, and you may experience mild discomfort as well. These side effects are normal. To promote swifter healing, you will need to wear a specially designed surgical support bra that is sized and measured to fit you.

The length of your recovery time will depend on several factors, including how large your breast implants are. Women who choose bigger implants can expect more tissue stretching. If your job is not physically demanding, you may be able to return to work within a week or two. Women who have a more strenuous job may need to take a longer time off work. It’s also best to abstain from exercising for two weeks and ease back into your workouts after that.

Everything You Need to Know About the Ideal Implant®

Our San Diego plastic surgeon strives to provide innovative treatments that have a strong track record of success, especially when it comes to breast implants. The Ideal Implant® is one such treatment that is generating interest among patients and plastic surgeons. Here’s everything you need to know about this type of implants.

What is the Ideal Implant®?

Most patients are familiar with traditional silicone and saline breast implants. While both have their advantages, each also has shortcomings associated with the treatment and result. For example, saline-filled implants can be adjusted as they are filled during surgery, and problems such as rupture are easier to quickly detect. However, these implants tend to look firm and slightly unnatural. In contrast, silicone breast implants create a natural, teardrop shape, but detecting ruptures in the implant can be difficult, increasing the risk of leaks into surrounding tissue.

The Ideal Implant® offers a unique, hybrid breast implant for women who want the beautiful shape of a silicone implant and the security of a saline implant. This innovative approach is thanks in part to the unique inner structure of the implant. Rather than having a single yet sturdy bag, the Ideal Implant® has two nested compartments that are filled with saline. These layers are then surrounded by a unique baffle shell that restricts movement of the saline in the outer layer, allowing the implant to take on the natural appearance reminiscent of a silicone breast.

With this unique internal structure, the Ideal Implant® offers patients the figure they desire while providing the peace of mind that their implants are uniquely protected from silent rupture.

Surgery & Cost

Like traditional saline implants, the Ideal Implant® is inserted first then filled with saline. As there are two saline compartments, however, surgery time may be slightly longer than the usual one hour for a traditional breast augmentation. Similarly, Ideal Implants® are somewhat more expensive than conventional implants. However, many of the patients who have visited our San Diego office for this treatment have found the results they achieve with this breast implant option make it a worthwhile investment.

Recovery

Recovery time after Ideal Implant® treatment is not much different from recovery from traditional silicone or saline implant placement. To mitigate post-procedure discomfort, Dr. Sayed may prescribe pain relief medications and will provide you with post-treatment instructions. To make your recovery as easy as possible, we recommend finding a caregiver who can help you during the first week following surgery.

Longevity

While the Ideal Implant® is a relatively recent innovation in breast augmentation, ongoing studies show that the long-term results are promising. The structured design of the implant has been shown to reduce the risk of capsular contraction and silent rupture. Likewise, the multiple barrier approach to encapsulating the saline material and smooth surface has made Ideal Implants® less likely to ripple and distort the skin above the implant, suggesting the treatment may provide greater longevity than traditional saline prosthetics.

Final Looks

The unique structure of this hybrid implant creates a concave, dome-like shape that adapts well to the curves of the patient’s chest. The implant looks incredibly natural, avoiding the awkward height of saline implants and creating a natural point overlooked by a silicone prosthetic. Overall, patients who receive the Ideal Implant® find their new shape looks and feels very natural.

What is the Recovery Process After Your Tummy Tuck?

For many women, abdominoplasty helps them regain a beautiful, feminine figure. While the treatment itself is critical, recovery makes up an essential part of the overall process. If you don’t recover correctly or safely, you may not enjoy the full potential of your treatment.

When you have an abdominoplasty completed by our San Diego plastic surgeon, this is the process you can expect for recovery:

Immediately After Surgery

Once the procedure is over, you’ll spend a few hours in the postoperative suite as we monitor your vitals. We’ll keep an eye out for blood clotting and other common side effects that may compromise the healing process.

You’ll be discharged in the care of a friend or family member and sent home with a set of post-procedure instructions. In the first 24 hours after surgery, you may get a few phone calls from our staff checking in, and we’ll provide an on-call number for you to reach our team or Dr. Sayed in case of emergency.

Having someone to help you maneuver around your home the first few days following your abdominoplasty is especially important. The pain medication you’ll receive can make you dizzy, which makes basic tasks more difficult than usual. Having an extra pair of helping hands will ensure you can concentrate on rest and recovery.

1 Week after Surgery

The first weeks after surgery are the most challenging. Patients often find that they are slightly stooped and that their skin feels tight. While we don’t recommend strenuous physical activity, Dr. Sayed strongly suggests walking around your home a little bit every day, starting the day you return home. This light activity helps stimulate circulation and eases the soreness that often accompanies this treatment. Beyond walking around your home, we strongly recommend patients take at least two weeks off from work and put their social calendars on hold for the first month after treatment.

As with any surgery, patients may experience physical discomforts, such as abdominal pain, cramping, nausea, and back discomfort. These side effects are completely normal, and our plastic surgeon can provide you and your caregiver with suggestions for alleviating your discomfort without compromising your recovery.

About a week following your appointment, you’ll visit our San Diego or Newport Beach offices for a follow-up appointment. During this visit, we’ll check on the incision site and remove any stitches that have not yet dissolved.  We may take out the surgical drains at this time as well, depending on how the healing progresses.

Post-Abdominoplasty Four Weeks and Beyond

Between weeks four and six in your recovery process, you’ll start to notice post-surgical bruising and swelling begin to subside. To continue healing safely, you’ll keep wearing a compression garment around the treated area. This helps the newly positioned abdominal tissues adapt to their contours while controlling swelling. Although you may still experience some discomfort, sudden pains will become less frequent.

Depending on how you’re healing, Dr. Sayed may give you the go-ahead to resume an exercise plan. However, we recommend taking it slow to protect a healing abdomen and muscles that haven’t been stretched strenuously for several months.  Walks and light cardio are great ways to get back into an exercise routine as your body continues to adjust to its new figure.

Successful Recovery is Unique

Every patient has a unique abdominoplasty experience. While some heal entirely within three to four months, others may take longer. As a result, our San Diego plastic surgeon takes great care to create individualized treatment and recovery plans for every patient. Doing so allows Dr. Sayed not only to provide excellent care but also ensure that our patients enjoy the results of abdominoplasty for years to come. To learn more about this procedure, contact our locations in San Diego or Newport Beach today and schedule a consultation.

Why do Breast Implants Need to be Exchanged?

While breast implants are long-lasting, they are not meant to last a lifetime. Whether due to a change in cosmetic taste or a condition like capsular contracture, many women choose to undergo breast revision surgery at some point after their initial augmentation.

Breast revision is a procedure that involves replacing the breast implants or correcting complications and physical irregularities that have developed. Board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Tim Sayed has performed thousands of these highly specialized procedures to help women feel comfortable with the appearance of their breasts again. Below we’ll be exploring some of the most common reasons why women replace their implants.

Capsular Contracture

Although it’s relatively rare, capsular contracture is a complication that can develop after breast augmentation. Following breast surgery, a capsule of scar tissue naturally forms around the implants. The formation of scar tissue is not necessarily a cause for concern since this is just the body’s natural response to the placement of a foreign object. However, in some cases, the capsule of scar tissue contracts too tightly around the implant. As a result, the breasts become hard and may look irregular.

Capsular contracture can be quite painful. This condition does not resolve on its own and requires surgical release of the scar tissue. After the scar tissue has been surgically removed, many women choose to have a new set of implants placed to maintain their preferred aesthetic.

Implant Rupture

Implant rupture occurs when the implant develops a tear or hole due to physical trauma, normal aging of the implant, compression during a mammogram, damage during a medical procedure, and other factors. When a rupture occurs with a saline implant, the breast will quickly look “deflated,” but the saline can safely be absorbed by the body.

In the case of silicone gel implants, a rupture might not be detected for quite some time because the implants are form stable and maintain their shape. Once a rupture has been confirmed, silicone gel implants must be removed as soon as possible. There is not the same urgency for replacing ruptured saline implants, but since they cause the breasts to rapidly lose volume, most women opt to have them replaced as soon as possible.

During breast revision surgery, Dr. Sayed will remove the ruptured implants from the implant pocket and surrounding tissue. After the breast pocket is cleaned and reshaped, a new set of implants can be placed.

Breast Asymmetry and Other Physical Changes

Aging, pregnancy, and breastfeeding can all cause the breasts to physically change, even if you have implants. These changes may result in breast asymmetry and sagging. Dr. Sayed can treat these changes with a breast revision and lift to restore a balanced, symmetrical appearance to your figure.

In some cases, the old implants can be left in, but most women opt to have a new set of implants placed at the time of their breast lift. Together, a breast revision and lift can fully rejuvenate the breasts and correct the changes caused by aging or pregnancy.

Aging Implants or Change in Taste

As breast implant technology continues to advance, many women are choosing to replace their aging implants. While women were mostly limited to saline implants years ago, today’s options include cohesive silicone gel and contoured implants, which have become popular due to their natural look and feel. Older implants also carry a higher risk of rupturing, which drives some patients to take advantage of improved implant technology. There is no expiration date for breast implants, but it’s generally recommended that patients replace them every ten years or so.

Some women decide to exchange their implants simply because their cosmetic tastes have evolved over time. Your ideal aesthetic in your 20s may no longer reflect your current taste. Breast augmentation is highly customizable, allowing women to attain an appearance that matches their tastes as they age.

When is it Time to Replace Your Implants?

Every patient is different, but you may want to consider changing your implants if you:

  • Are developing symptoms of capsular contracture, including hardened breasts, breasts that are painful to the touch or have an abnormal appearance
  • Suspect your implants have ruptured
  • Have developed implant malposition
  • Have developed breast asymmetry after pregnancy, aging, or other factors
  • Are no longer happy with the type of implants you have
  • Want to change the size, shape, or volume of your breasts

If you’re considering a breast revision in the San Diego or Newport Beach areas, contact Dr. Tim Sayed to schedule your personal consultation. Whether you’d like to change the size of your implants or you’ve developed a complication following breast augmentation, Dr. Sayed can create a personalized treatment plan customized to your needs.

Consultation to Poolside: A Tummy Tuck Timeline

Abdominoplasty, or tummy tuck surgery, is one of the most popular procedures chosen by men and women every year. With its ability to sculpt and contour the abdomen, this transformative surgery is especially popular for those who want to get a tight, toned tummy just in time for summer.

When considering tummy tuck surgery, it’s important to know what to expect so you can plan accordingly. This helpful guide discusses everything you’ll need to know about the entire process – from your initial consultation to flaunting your new shape at the poolside.

Tummy Tuck Timeline: Your Personal Guide

Week 1: Consultation

Scheduling a consultation will be your first step. This meeting will allow you to have any questions or concerns addressed in detail by a plastic surgeon. Your candidacy for the procedure will be evaluated, and the surgeon will let you know which surgical approach would best meet your goals. Patients seeking this procedure typically have the following cosmetic concerns:

  • Sagging abdominal skin
  • Stubborn abdominal fat that does not respond to diet or exercise
  • Over-stretched abdominal muscles, usually caused by pregnancy

If you decide to take the next step, you will be provided with a customized treatment plan. The surgery is typically scheduled out 2-3 weeks from your consultation, but this can vary.

Week 3-4: Prep and Surgery

Before your surgery date, you may be required to undergo routine lab tests or obtain a medical evaluation. You might also have some pre-operative guidelines to follow, including minor dietary adjustments and taking or avoiding certain medications.

On the day of surgery, you can expect the procedure to take around 2-3 hours to complete, but this all depends on the extent of treatment needed. Some patients may only require 90 minutes, while others may need up to 4 hours to complete the procedure.

During the procedure, your surgeon will make an incision along the lower abdomen. The length of the incision will vary depending on your cosmetic goals and the amount of excess tissue present. Excess tissue will then be removed, and the abdominal wall and muscles will be tightened. Sometimes the procedure is also performed with liposuction to produce an ideally sculpted look.

Week 5-6: Beginning of Recovery

In the beginning of the recovery period, it’s common for patients to experience abdominal pain, bruising, and swelling. It’s also common for patients to walk in a slightly bent-over position for the first week or two after surgery. This is because the body needs to adjust to the tightened muscles.

For an optimal outcome, this part of your recovery should be spent resting, and you will be asked to wear a surgical compression garment to reduce swelling. This should be worn for about 3 months for best results. It’s best to take 2-3 weeks off from work, and you should also avoid driving during this time.

If any drains were placed after the procedure, they will be removed by your surgeon about 10-14 days after surgery. Most sutures used in tummy tuck surgery are dissolvable, but you may need to return to your surgeon’s office to have certain sutures removed at around 2-3 weeks after surgery.

Week 7-8: Getting Back to Normal

By this point, you will be past the peak of your recovery and back to some of your regular activities, including work. You can also start incorporating light fitness into your daily routine at around 4 weeks after surgery. Strenuous exercise can usually be resumed about 6 -7 weeks after surgery. You should still be wearing your compression garment as much as possible during this time.

Week 9-10: Enjoy Your Results!

At this point, you will be about 6 weeks post-op. That means you’ll be able to resume your regular exercise routine – and you’ll also be ready to flaunt your new shape! Most of your swelling should resolve by this point, but it’s still recommended that patients wear their compression garment as much as possible until around 3 months after surgery.

Overall, abdominoplasty is an effective way of restoring a fit, youthful appearance for those with excess skin and exercise-resistant fat on the abdomen. Ready to take the next step? Contact board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Tim Sayed to schedule your personal consultation today. Dr. Sayed serves both the Newport Beach and San Diego areas, and he would be happy to discuss your full range of surgical options.

Gynecomastia 101: Find out More About this Condition

Gynecomastia, is a condition that occurs when glandular tissue in the male breasts become enlarged. It is colloquially referred to as man boobs. It is a condition that commonly occurs in young male teens when they hit puberty. Sometimes male newborns have them too, as their mother’s hormones stay with them for a while.

In some cases, however, a lot of middle aged men find themselves with this condition, every 1 in 4 men, to be precise. It is to be noted that it is not the same as lipomastia which is caused by fat deposits and not glandular enlargement.

What Causes Gynecomastia?

Gynecomastia is essentially caused by an hormonal imbalance where there might be an excess of estrogen and other female hormones. For newborns, it can last a few days and for most teenagers, just during the time when their body tries to adjust to the hormonal changes at the time when they hit puberty. Usually for teenagers, it can last up to a maximum of three years; however, if the breasts grow more than 4 cm in diameter, they are unlikely to regress.

For middle-aged to older men, the causes may be different. Aging plays a big role in changing hormonal levels, and as a result males may develop large breast. In addition to hormonal changes, some medicines, excessive alcohol consumption, and drug abuse can cause it as well.

The following drugs are known to contribute to gynecomastia:

• Antibiotics
• Certain steroids
• Anti-anxiety drugs
• Heartburn drugs
• Chemotherapy
• AIDS medication

Gynecomastia can also be caused by certain illnesses such as:

• Obesity
• Hyperthyroidism
• Liver cirrhosis
• Kidney failure

In addition to health conditions and medication gynecomastia can also be caused by poor lifestyle habits, including lack of exercise and a bad diet, tea tree oil, and lavender in soaps and lotions.

What Are The Symptoms?

In addition to the breasts increasing in size, other symptoms include:

• Nipple discharge
• Tenderness and pain in the region
• Firm, rubbery feeling under the nipples

Living With Gynecomastia

Having gynecomastia is not harmful and many men live with the condition. It can, however, be frustrating to deal with on a daily basis and cause you to feel incredibly insecure. It can lead to poor confidence levels and adversely effect different aspects of your life. It is not physically harmful, but it could be an indicator of some underlying issue such as testicular cancer. The growth of the breasts may make the area feel tender and painful in some cases.

How Can It Be Treated?

In many cases, the condition may disappear on its own. However, if the hormonal imbalance is caused to due to illnesses or medication, the process of regression may be slow or non-existent. In these situations, treatment is required. While medication may be able to decrease the size by some degree, if the breasts have grown too large, surgery may be required.

If nothing makes your large breast reduce in size and you are bothered by it, there are a few surgical options that can be considered. Liposuction to remove the fat and if need be, endoscopic mastectomy. The latter removes the gland through small incisions made on the breasts.
