Liposuction Differences in Men vs. Women

It’s no wonder why liposuction is one of the top requested procedures for men and women. But did you know that the procedure affects each patient differently? Here are just a few differences that can require different approaches for men and women.

Different goals for different patients

While the liposuction procedure is the same for both men and women, the reasons behind why each patient pursues treatment can vary.

For starters, where men and women carry their fat varies tremendously. Women tend to carry more fat on their bodies, which tends to be stored around the hips and thighs, or the gluteal-femoral area. This part of the body tends to be difficult to target with diet and exercise. In contrast, men carry fat around their midsection – think the stereotypical “beer gut”.

This difference is where excess fat is stored changes the goals for each patient. Since fat around the stomach is often easier to lose than fat in the gluteal-femoral area, liposuction isn’t used to remove fat so much as add definition. As a result, when men visit Dr. Sayed’s offices in Newport Beach or La Jolla, most use liposuction to improve muscle definition and create a more masculine figure.

On the flip side, women find liposuction to be the ideal way to remove excess fat cells from the areas they accumulate. In addition to recontouring stubborn pockets of fat, liposuction is an excellent way for women to regain a more feminine figure. At Sr. Sayed’s practice, we find that many women use liposuction in tandem with other cosmetic procedures, such as Brazilian Butt Lifts or fat transfer to help reshape their entire body in one comprehensive procedure. These combination treatments are especially popular post-baby or following substantial weight loss.

Physical differences in fat composition

Aesthetic goals aren’t the only differences in liposuction treatment between men and women. Fat cell composition and accumulation below the skin also require different approaches. For example, fat cells in men tend to be thicker, more fibrous and stick close together to create a layer right above the muscle. The way in which fat cells develop, accumulate and expand so closely to the muscle tissue make removal a challenge – even with highly-targeted liposuction.

Women don’t face this issue. Instead, women are genetically designed to carry more fat healthily (nature’s answer to helping nourish babies in the womb). This causes fat cells to develop subcutaneously, making them easier to remove with liposuction. This placement of fat changes the way our experienced plastic surgeon targets fat cells and pockets during the procedure and ensures the best results.
